Electric ferries in Lyon enter service with AAApropulsion A-Pod technology
Earlier this year, two of the four 100% electrically powered ferries were put into service by SYTRAL Mobilités, the Joint Transport Authority of Lyon. Built by shipyard OCEA, the vessels Le Gone and La Fenotte can each carry 75 passengers including bicycles.
The project was technically challenging due to the limited energy storage capacity of the battery system, requiring a highly efficient and lightweight propulsion solution. Through extensive CFD simulations and the application of a hybrid nozzle concept, AAApropulsion delivered the optimal solution with the A-Pod220PG, enabling the vessels to meet their demanding operational profile.
After two months of intensive operation, the propulsion installations have successfully passed their first real-life test. Energy consumption remains within expected parameters and the required vessel speed is comfortably achieved. The ferries operate 12 hours per day, seven days a week, year-round — a demanding duty cycle and an excellent stress test for the fully zero-emission propulsion system.
These results once again confirm AAApropulsion’s engineering capabilities and the reliability of A-Pod propulsion systems in intensive and sustainable maritime applications.
AAApropulsion continues to focus on efficient and sustainable electric propulsion for the next generation of vessels.
